Editing a Product's Locations

Note: This feature is available only to administrators and to inventory assistants with permission to edit product data.

Locations are the physical places in your company where products are used or stored. When you assign a product to a location, you record that the product is used or stored at that location. Users then see that product when searching products at that location or running reports based on that location.

Each product-to-location assignment can have a recorded Date in use when the product came into use/storage at that location and a Date out of use when the product stopped being used/stored at that location. When a product's location assignment has a recorded Date out of use, the product is considered no longer used/stored at that location. When you search or run reports on that location, the results show that product only if you choose to "include products no longer used."

Edit a product's locations when you need to add a new location assignment, edit the dates of an existing location assignment, or delete an existing location assignment. When the product is used/stored at a location not shown in the location tree, see Managing the Location Tree for details on keeping the location tree up to date.

Note: Delete a location assignment only when it was added in error. When a product is no longer used/stored at a location, do not delete that location assignment. Instead, edit the assignment and enter a Date out of use. This retains the historical record of when the product was used/stored at that location.

To edit a product's locations:

Starting at the Product Information page (How do I get there?), do the following:

  1. Click the EDIT button at the top of the display.

Note: This button appears only when you are logged in as a) an administrator, or b) an inventory assistant with permission to edit product data.

The Information Administration page opens, showing the areas of product data you can edit.

  2. In the Modify Indexes area, click Locations.

The Locations display shows the product's current location assignments.

  3. Do any of the following:

Note: If you need to refer to the product's MSDS, click [View MSDS] in the upper right to open the product's MSDS in a new window.

Each location assignment change immediately takes effect for any user searching by location or running reports based on location.
